West Outlet, Rockwood Dam, and the other Long Pond
West Outlet is the second outlet from Moosehead Lake that flows into the Kennebec via a series of small ponds. The first of these ponds is labeled Long Pond on the map and is not to be confused the the bigger Long Pond connects with Brassua Lake (not to mention Long Pond in Belgrade lakes). You drive along the west bank on this Long Pond and the stream that flows out of it on Somerset Road. This logging road turns into Capital Road is the most direct route to Rt 201 and the Forks, if you don’t mind driving 20 miles on a gravel road.
Someone fishing off of Rockwood Dam with Moosehead Lake extending off to the right.
While I could have wished for sun, the colors on the stumps and foliage in the middle of the stream just below the dam and bridge made for a nice micro-vista.
This is a drone shot of the little pond just below the dam and you can see the stream heading off to Long Pond in the upper right.
One of the beautiful vistas you get driving along Somerset Rd. This is looking back north at a wide point in the creek downstream of Long Pond. The map below shows the approximate location.
