The Wall Remembers

The photo shows the exterior of the former Boynton's Market, with its fading sign on a weathered brick wall above a community board. The scene emphasizes the blending of historical traces with the vibrancy of contemporary local life.

Old letters linger while new messages arrive.
Ghost signs whisper beside today’s notices.

This photograph captures a weathered brick wall layered with history, where faded lettering from the past coexists with a modern bulletin board. The composition reveals how memory and community leave their traces in shared public spaces.

This location needs no introduction to the Hallowell community. The corner of Water and Union Streets was once home to Boynton’s Market and bore the painted sign long after the business was gone. Recently, the corner building was painted white and the decaying community bulletin board removed, but the fading Boynton’s lettering was preserved. (The owner is also working with Vision Hallowell to put up a new community bulletin board.)
