The Socony Station, 1933
The Stories From Maine Facebook page shared a photo of the old Socony gas station on Water Street in Maine. Here’s a deeper dive into the photo. The photo is from the Hubbard Free Library’s collection but you can see a high quality scan of it on the Maine Memory Network by clicking here If you go to that photo and zoom in you van make out more details, especially in the sign.
BTW- SOCONY stands for Standard Oil Company of New York and the company changed its name to Mobil in 1966.
BTW2- The stone pier on the west bank of the Kennebec just north of Hallowell was built by Socony to receive shipments of fuel. Thanks to Bob McIntire for setting me straight on that.
