Hallowell Then & Now: The Train Station

I am working on a series of videos juxtaposing historic photos of Hallowell (and later other parts of the Kennebec) with current photos of the same location. I got off to a a bit of a false start last summer with this video of the train station (at bottom).

In the photo, which is part of the Hubbard Free Library’s collection, you can see a southbound train at the station in the 1870s. Note the box car in the track shed used to load cars from the granite works to the left of the photo.

In the foreground to the right, you can see a railing which would be the back edge of the parking lot that is now on the corner of Second and Central streets. In another decade or two, the Johnson Bros. shoe factory would be built back to that location and loom over the track and station for the better part of a century.
